Since 2012, we’ve been thinking about what Femficātiō truly means. The early definition posited was complex, rigorous, and steeped in critique of how philosophy and problem-solving have been shaped almost entirely through male-centred frameworks. And while those ideas still hold, we’ve come to understand that the essence of Femficātiō is simpler—and deeper.
Femficātiō is a song about the nature of things.
Femininity for too long has been positioned as a counter to masculinity, and since that cultural shift, everything has been about equalling with the masculine in a way that negates the feminine as it’s own force—complete, sovereign and real. For instance, if the masculine can be compared to fire—direct, hot, consuming—then the feminine would just be water—cool, fluid, and life-sustaining. Neither is superior, and neither exists without the other. But we live in a world where water attempts to be fire, fire attempts to be water—and in the milieu there is only confusion.
Femficātiō is the opposite of “dark femininity,” which often recycles patriarchal power through seductive control and exaltation of death cults. Instead, Femficātiō is the healing force that brings balance back into creative systems—art, literature, politics, music, science and thought.
It is rooted in the idea that femininity is not just an aesthetic, proclivity, or series of personality traits, but a paramount energy of the natural world with it’s own essential and unique properties—a force of axial transformation. Of flow. Of imperishable revolution through birth and rebirth. And in the past twelve years, as we’ve gone about our everyday activities of survival and living, we’ve thought about and discarded many iterations of what this could look like. Conclusion: our definitions are ever evolving, so what we resist is being labelled, or adhering to politicised narratives that aren’t in keeping with beauty, truth … the body and breadth of human agency. Of potential and compassion.
Understandings change—we grow. So, here is what Femficātiō asks: What if our solutions didn’t come from conquest, partitions and destruction, but from regeneration and unshakeable faith in life? That’s our Spirit.
That’s what Femficātiō invites.
We want to hear from writers and artists who, first and foremost can create outstanding work. You don’t have to fit into a political label—we’re not looking for identity checkboxes. Yes, we’re women editors. Yes, we’re Black women. But you don’t have to be a woman, or BIPOC, or anything in particular.
What matters to us is that your work is compelling, honest, and aligned with the deeper spirit of Femficātiō—in its truest, most human sense.
We’re not currently accepting full manuscripts, but we are open to book proposals. You can find submission details to the right. Look through www.femficatio.com to find out more.
